Admissions

College of Lake County Admission Policies

These policies pertain to all students in all programs. Policies for particular programs within CLC are more specific. Please pay attention to the differences.

Anyone who can benefit from the courses and programs of study offered by the college is welcome.

Admission to the college does not ensure entrance into a particular course or program of study.

The college reserves the right to:

  • Limit enrollment because of space or budget restrictions.
  • Establish selective admission requirements.
  • Give preference to residents of Community College District 532. 

Students must provide admissions and records office with required records/credentials:

  • Official high school transcript(s) must be sent directly to CLC from the High School attended, or a copy of the applicant's High School equivalency (GED) test report must be submitted.
  • Official transcripts from any previous college(s) must be sent directly to CLC by the college(s).
  • Foreign transcript must be evaluated by an external educational agency and sent directly to CLC's admission office.
  • Language proficiency

Health Care Program Requirements

  • Students admitted to the health career programs are required to submit documentation that they have complied with the program health requirements.

Program Certificate Entrance Requirements

Academic

  • Demonstrate English language and Math proficiency prior to enrolling in MLT 110.
  • Have a CLC GPA of 2.0 or higher prior to enrolling in MLT 110.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED or equivalent such as degree completion from another college.
  • Be at least 18 years old.

Non-academic
Because of inherent nature of the service provided by Phlebotomy Profession, certain minimum abilities i.e. essential functions are expected of students entering the field.

  • Psychomotor skills ( eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity) sufficient for safe and successful practice of phlebotomy.
  • Visual acuity ( normal or compensated vision) sufficient for safe and successful practice of phlebotomy.
  • Adequate English verbal and written communication skills to safely and successfully interact with peer, supervisors and other members of the health care team.

Phlebotomy Clinical practicum requirements to be completed prior to enrolling in MLT 116, Phlebotomy Clinical

  • Maintain a grade of “C” or better in MLT 110 and MLT 115, and have an overall GPA of 2 or higher.
  • Proof of health insurance and documentation or proof of all required immunizations to satisfy phlebotomy health requirements.
  • Drug testing and Criminal Background Check may be required by the clinical sites.

To successfully complete CLC’s phlebotomy certificate program, consider the following points prior to enrolling:

  • The program’s courses are compressed and fast-paced
    • MLT 110 and MLT 115 are 4 weeks each. We meet 3 hours per day, 4 days per week (M, T, W, Th).
    • MLT 116, the Phlebotomy Clinical, is supervised clinical experience at hospital or clinical laboratories that requires 8 hours a day, 5 days a week for 3 continuous weeks during the day, (M, T, W, Th, F), no week-ends, and 100 successful blood draws.
  • Enroll in the program courses only if you are able to commit yourself to the 3-week MLT 116 Phlebotomy Clinical which immediately follows MLT 110 and MLT 115.
  • The program courses use computer-enhance instructions and activities that require time, computer skills and commitment to succeed.
  • Students are expected to have the time and commitment to do the required readings, assigned tasks, and perform the laboratory exercises as scheduled during the fast-paced program.

To receive the CLC Phlebotomy Certificate of Completions, the students has to successfully complete the following courses with a ”C” or better and maintain an overall GPA of 2 or higher.

MLT 110, Introduction to Medical Laboratory Technology 2
MLT 115, Phlebotomy techniques 2
MLT 116 Phlebotomy Clinical 2

Phlebotomy Certificate Program Policies and Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old. Applicants must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Applicants who have taken courses at CLC must have a GPA of a "C" (2.00) or better on all courses taken at CLC.
  • Applicants must be Math and English proficient.
  • A student must have sufficient English competence (written and verbal) to interact independently with patients and co-workers.
  • "Health Care Worker Criminal Background Check" may be necessary in order to satisfy the entrance requirements of CLC's clinical affiliates.
    • Students with less than perfect records may apply for a waiver from the State of Illinois; the clinical affiliate may allow a student with a waiver into the Practicum.
  • Drug Testing may be necessary in order to satisfy entrance requirements at CLC's clinical affiliates prior to the clinical practicum. Arrangements for the checking/testing will be made by the clinical affiliates.
    • Students will be notified about the arrangements by CLC's program coordinator.
    • Students are expected to cover the cost of the drug testing
    • Students in the program are expected to have clean records.
  • Applicants admitted to the program are required to complete and satisfy the physical health requirements prior to admission to the clinical practicum.
    Complete the emergency medical information form listing
    • Health conditions or problem(s) such as chronic disease, pregnancy, injuries etc.
    • Family Doctor and phone number
    • Next of Kin to be contacted in case of emergency.
  • Applicants admitted to the program are required to carry some type of health insurance prior to beginning their clinical practicum.
    • The College of Lake County does not provide student health insurance coverage and is not responsible for any bills incurred for hospital or medical services provided in case of illness, injury, accidents or exposure related incidents.
    • The student will be held responsible for costs.
    • Documentation and verification that this information is given to the student is the completed emergency medical information submitted by the student.
  • Applicants must have the "minimum essential functions" necessary for successful completion of the program.
    • Students entering the Phlebotomy Programs must be able to meet the physical, mental, and psychological demands of the program (and subsequently, the demands encountered during the practice of their profession).
