The relationship between mainland China and Taiwan has always been a hot button issue in the US foreign policy toward China . This lecture offers a brief historical account on how Taiwan became independent under the Nationalist Party led by Chiang, Kai-shek (Jiang Jieshi) and how US became involved in the process. Over the years Taiwan 's politicians have debated over "one China " issue. The recent growing support for Taiwan 's independence as one nation has caused a great deal of tension between the Chinese government and the current Taiwan leaders. Will there be a military occupation by the Chinese PLA if Taiwan declares itself as an independent country? How will US respond to such an international crisis?

4. The Anglo-American Special Relationship in the Postwar Period by Dr. Septimus Paul, Professor of History, College of lake County
12-1:00 May 3 Thursday T326-327-328 TEC
Winston Churchill first coined the term "special relationship" in 1946 during his Iron Curtain speech. By then he had already cultivated close Anglo-American diplomatic ties through his intimate friendship with Franklin Roosevelt. This special relationship seemed inevitable due to the shared cultural and historical inheritance of the two countries. However, this relationship has not been always special, nor has it been devoid of differences and complexities in the post World War Two era. Moreover, some observers have judged this relationship to be an unequal partnership between a "has been" power clinging to the coattails of a major super power, blindly dancing to the tunes played in Washington . This session will examine the history of this relationship and the diplomatic and national principles that have guided it in the postwar period.
